Compression Fracture
Compression fractures occur when there is a collapse of the bone. The vertebral body, or the rectangular building block of the spine, is often the site of a compression fracture. This pain is usually sudden and intense and worse with sneezing or coughing or walking. Limited mobility and loss height can be present. Oftentimes, the pain is so severe it requires hospitalization.
The biggest risk factor is osteoporosis. Sedentary lifestyle, tobacco use, and low calcium and vitamin D are less common factors. A history of cancer or a severe fall can also precipitate a compression fracture.
Dr.Rousseau treats pain from compression fractures with multiple modalities. These include appropriate medical management and education on prevention and mobilization and the use of a brace. Minimally invasive injections such as balloon kyphoplasty (injection of a hard plaster to bolster the fractured bone) are performed in severe cases to stop the pain.
